Imbros Gorge

Starting off at the fertile plain of Askyfou, the 8km long trail through the Imbros gorge offers a great hiking experience. The beautiful scenery and relative easiness of the walk make it an ideal hike, also for families with children (not too small)!

The Imbros gorge is the second most known gorge in Crete with a total length of about 11 km, running parallel to the famous Samaria gorge. The 8km long part of the gorge which is ideal for hiking is beautiful in nature, never really steep and, although stony, not particularly strenuous.

The walk starts at an altitude of 780 m. from the mountain village Imbros and ends at Komitades village, almost at sea-level with an average walking time of 2 – 3 hours. The gorge has impressive “gates” and the narrowest spot in the gorge is less than 2 meter wide! This magnificent landscape is worthwhile visiting, an attractive opportunity to enjoy the experience of crossing a gorge by foot. A visit to the south coast of Crete for a refreshing swim completes this excursion-day!

Good health and shape are required. Bring comfortable walking-shoes!
